International Organization for Standardization, also known as ISO, is one of the international standards for measuring the quality of an organization in a management system. This certification is essential in the business because it shows the company’s credibility level.

This certification is also required by a company that wants to compete globally. This is because ISO also plays a role in improving the quality management system. There are several types of ISO certificates that are known in the business. Here are the four most common among business person in Indonesia.

  1. ISO 9001

ISO 9001 was first issued in 1987. It can be said as the most popular certification in the corporate world. This ISO has undergone two revisions, and the most recent is ISO 9001: 2008. The new standard was prepared by Technical Committee (TC) 176. This certification is applied to the process approach. The process approach has a goal to improve the effectiveness of the quality management system. This approach will encourage an organization to implement, manage, identify, and improve continuous improvement.

  1. ISO 14001

If ISO 9001 is related to the quality management system, ISO 14001 is the standard that refers to the environmental management system. But basically, ISO 14001 and 9001 have the same concept. Both seek to foster continuous improvement. This standard is applied by identifying aspects and environmental impacts resulting from a company’s activities. The assessed aspects not only of waste or pollution management but also include efforts to save energy consumption.

  1. ISO 22000

This certification contains requirements on food safety management systems. Food or beverage companies should be able to meet ISO 22000 standards to improve the quality of their products in the eyes of customers. For that reason, they need to improve their internal controls, especially those related to the production process. The difference between ISO 22000 and 9001 lies only in clause 7 (on product planning and realization) and clause 8 (on verification, validation, and system improvement).

  1. ISO/IEC 27001

The development of information technology has brought significant changes in the business. The changes make most of the business transactions to be online. Even the important data and information of the company is more often distributed via the internet. It made The International Organization for Standardization decide to issue ISO/IEC 27001 in 2005. So, this type of ISO refers to the information security management system or better known as the Information Security Management System (ISMS).
